Just over a week after RBG’s passing, my mom, Blake, and I decided to go for a morning walk down the National Mall, leading up to the United States Capitol. It was a beautiful Saturday, and you could feel the cool, fall air that was on the horizon. We knew that the 2020 Prayer March was taking place, organized by Reverend Franklin Graham, and we wanted to check it out. We walked past the Smithsonian museums, wheeling Blake down the mall in her stroller. Christian preaching rang through the crowded sidewalks. Prayer filled the air. It was a beautiful sight and sound.

After we finished our walk, we rushed back to my apartment so that I could make it in time for President Trump’s Fox News interview with Pete Hegseth. President Trump had agreed to interview with Fox just before the big event of that afternoon—the nomination of soon-to-be Justice Amy Coney Barrett. “ACB,” as she would be dubbed, was a mother of seven. Known as a rigorous academic, one Notre Dame law school professor remarked, “Amy Coney is the best student I ever had.”3 Though it took President Trump over a week to nominate Barrett, I was fairly certain this would be his pick. In fact, the day after RBG’s passing, President Trump and I had a phone call where he seemed somewhat resolute in nominating Barrett.

The Saturday afternoon of Barrett’s nomination, I rushed up the stairs of the West Wing and into the West Wing lobby. I stopped when I saw several notable pastors congregated in a corner. I recognized many of the faces and stopped briefly to say hello. Among the group waiting to meet with President Trump was Reverend Franklin Graham. Reverend Graham’s father was of course the late Reverend Billy Graham, affectionately known as “America’s Pastor.” Billy Graham had counseled every American president from President Truman on down. Now, here was Franklin Graham—a spiritual leader during the COVID-19 pandemic—at the White House to convene with President Trump.

Franklin, the president of Samaritan’s Purse, a Christian humanitarian aid nonprofit, had rallied Christians into action amid the COVID-19 outbreak. When resources were sparse in New York City, Franklin’s charity had set up a field hospital in Central Park. In addition to offering physical assistance, he also offered spiritual guidance to a grieving nation. On Easter Sunday, standing in front of the field hospital his organization had constructed, Franklin gave an Easter message called “America Together: Keeping the Faith.” I watched his broadcast on Fox News from my Washington, DC, apartment. It was the first weekend after I had started my new job as press secretary.

Franklin began his sermon that Easter of 2020, talking about how we are “in the middle of a storm”—the storm of COVID-19. He ended his message by assuring the world that we don’t need to be alone as we endure the storms of life. “That storm that you’re going through. God doesn’t give us a pass…. If you come to Christ, you don’t get some kind of pass where you don’t have to go through storms.
